Dear omss,

Did you know that there are over 6,800 spoken languages around the world? The International Organization of Standardization (ISO) recognizes approximately 400 of those languages for industrial and commercial standardization needs. Businesses that employ recognized languages and meet ISO requirements experience trade through enhanced product quality and reliability, better interoperability and compatibility, greater ease of maintenance and reduced costs.

Just like corporations that meet ISO conventions, parking firms that meet established indusrty standards also experience similar benefits. Let's take a look at the standards our industry is employing and why we should consider complying.

Why Comply?
Most industries protect their customers through compliance standards that instill a higher level of ethical and lawful conduct. In the parking and transportation industries, compliance standards such as the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation System Protocol (NTCIP) and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) not only increase industry integrity but also provide opportunities for product integration and cross selling.
Sport the Uniform
Have you ever wondered why teams sport uniforms? Uniforms are utilized for easy identification. Parking signs and markings that are uniform in design, like the "stop sign," are more easily recognized.

Easy Identification: MUTCD

In an effort to help people easily identify parking signs and markings, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is reviewing MUTCD compliance. Although parking wasn't included in the 2009 MUTCD compliance standards, it is currently being addressed again.

Armed with the knowledge that  MUTCD compliance may become standard, we can take a proactive approach, making even the smallest changes, which in turn, will greatly assist in becoming uniform in the future.

Practice Common Communication
It's a known fact that communication is a major factor in business success.
Universal communication within an organization reduces delays, decreases costs, and increases productivity. The parking industry, like most businesses, benefits from utilizing common communication tools, such as NTCIP.

Open Architecture: NTCIP
Some parking products meet industry communication standards, such as open architecture. Open architecture is a type of computer and/or software architecture that facilitates adding, upgrading and swapping of components.
NTCIP is the family of standards on which a lot of transportation hardware and software is based, it not only instills standardizations, but it also allows for product integration and cross distribution.

Parking products that utilize computer and software components can benefit from becoming NTCIP compliant. Like many of McCain's traffic product offerings, McCain's Parking Guidance System also meets NTCIP compliance standards, allowing for product integration with other NTCIP compliant products, greatly increasing ease of use and future industry partnership opportunities.

Comply Without Compromising
Naturally, businesses want to keep product design and technology confidential to remain competitive, but it can still be accomplished while meeting industry compliance standards.

Compliance standards only speak to their specific requirements, leaving all other design and technological components completely proprietary. Compliance standards, they're not only the future, but also a win/win!
