City of Minneapolis Traffic Alerts Update

Going to Monday's Vikings game at the U?

Remember Winter Parking Restrictions

Drivers need to know where to park to avoid a ticket and tow

Monday night’s Minnesota Vikings game at TCF Bank Stadium will bring tens of thousands of ticket-holders to the University of Minnesota campus. We want to remind fans who plan on driving to the game to observe Winter Parking Restrictions when looking for on-street parking so they can avoid a ticket and tow.

Winter Parking Restrictions went into effect Friday, Dec. 17 in Minneapolis to help make sure  emergency vehicles can make it down streets narrowed by the record December snowfall.

On-street parking will be restricted on many streets around TCF Bank Stadium on game night, so look for and observe all parking signs.

Drivers need to follow Winter Parking Restrictions:

  • Under Winter Parking Restrictions, parking is allowed on both sides of Snow Emergency routes and parkways, and the ODD side of non-Snow Emergency-routes, unless otherwise posted and provided a Snow Emergency has NOT been declared.
  • Drivers who see an available on-street parking spot should check to see if the street is a Snow Emergency route. If it’s not, they should make sure the spot is on the ODD side of the street Before parking. Under Winter Parking Restrictions, vehicles parked on the EVEN side of non-Snow Emergency routes are subject to tickets and tows.

There are a number of alternatives to driving to campus. To find out how to get to and from the game, go to the University of Minnesota’s transit website, www.pts.umn.edu, and click on the Vikings logo when it appears in the “spotlight” section.

Drivers heading back to work Monday morning should also observe the Winter Parking Restrictions. People park along city streets for the work day throughout the city. These drivers need to remember that parking is now prohibited on the even side of many of the neighborhood streets they’re accustomed to using. Drivers should allow for additional time in the morning to find places to park.

The City of Minneapolis uses a number of ways to help folks learn about and follow the Snow Emergency and Winter Parking Restrictions rules. We advise drivers to put several of these tools to use, not just one or two. The more ways they have to learn about a Snow Emergency and Winter Parking Restrictions, the less likely they’ll be towed because they didn’t know about these declarations.

  • Call the hotline - By calling the automated (612) 348-SNOW hotline, folks can find out if a Snow Emergency has been declared and where to park during Winter Parking Restrictions.
  • Check out the City’s website - Go to www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow to find out whether a Snow Emergency has been declared and for a wealth of information on Snow Emergencies in many languages.  For Winter Parking Restrictions information visit www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow/winter-parking-restrictions.asp .
  • Phone alerts - Minneapolis uses a phone alert system to notify residents when Snow Emergencies are declared and Winter Parking Restrictions are instituted. The system automatically calls listed numbers—to also receive a call to your cell phone, go to www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow/phone-alert.asp to sign up.
  • E-mail alerts - You can sign up to get Snow Emergency alerts automatically e-mailed to you. Go to www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow/esubscribe.asp for more details. Winter Parking Restrictions information will also be e-mailed to those who subscribe to these alerts.
  • The media - News releases are sent to the media so TV, radio stations and other news outlets can inform their viewers, listeners and readers that a Snow Emergency is in effect or Winter Parking Restrictions have been instituted.
  • On Cable - Tune in to cable channels 14 and 79. These channels will have information in several languages when a Snow Emergency is declared or Winter Parking Restrictions instituted.
  • Facebook – “Like” Minneapolis Snow Emergency on Facebook. Go to www.facebook.com/MinneapolisSnowEmergency.
  • Twitter - twitter.com/minneapolissnow. If you have a Twitter account, just follow us.

Even though winter doesn’t begin for a couple more days, we’re close to reaching the amount of snow we have in an entire season. So far 34 inches of snow has fallen in Minneapolis and the average snowfall for an entire winter is 48 inches. More than 17 inches of that came down in last weekend’s blizzard – the fifth largest recorded in the metro area. This means snow, even when it’s plowed, has begun to encroach on residential streets. The result is that many streets throughout Minneapolis have narrowed significantly, which has the potential to make it difficult for fire engines, ambulances and other emergency vehicles to navigate the roadways.

The decision to enact Winter Parking Restrictions was made by the Police Chief and City Engineer, who were also in consultation with the Fire Chief. These restrictions will remain in place until April 1, unless conditions allow the City to lift the ban earlier.
