Be careful what you wish for in Egypt
As the Iraq experience has shown over the past eight years, removing a dictator is the easy bit; ensuring people power leads to peace and freedom is far more complicated and fraught with danger. Far from ushering in a new era of democratic prosperity and a stable peace, an Egyptian revolution could lead to a period of virulent anti-Americanism and Islamic extremism.

What do flood speeches say about us all?
Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott have said much about the floods in the past week. Both were pilloried and praised for their words, depending upon the critics' points of view. But we've been so busy judging the qualities of Gillard and Abbott that we haven't noticed that both leaders told us a lot about ourselves when they delivered their keynote speeches.

The DrumMore from The Drum >

Prime Minister Julia Gillard speaks about the flood levy at the National Press Club in Canberra on January 27, 2011.

Poll: voters will save the hysteria for the next new tax
The first private research on Julia Gillard's flood levy plays down thoughts of talkback hysteria and an assumed "voter backlash" to the tax. The only objective survey thus far into the nature of voter reaction to generic tax increases suggests Julia Gillard has got the political, if not economic structure, of the flood tax right. But the author of that research raises a crucial caveat: whether the social imperatives of the flood levy can be sustained in the face of the looming carbon tax is less certain. That's the "Big One" Tony Abbott is pinning his 2013 election hopes on.

News of a freakish reversal of direction in Australian climate policy is not, in itself, particularly stunning any more; this policy area is prone to more rethinks than Lady Gaga's day wardrobe. But what Julia Gillard did at yesterday's National Press Club address is nonetheless pretty staggering. Her cool public slaughter of about $1.3 billion in clean energy incentives could be described in several different ways.

Financial markets applaud GillardÂ's flood package
The GovernmentÂ's package is thoughtful and responsible, the levy highly progressive, yet Gillard and Swan have been pummelled by the pundits.
