Every second Monday night, I feel a little frisson of excitement knowing that a Newspoll in the morning will bring me a fresh mound of numbers to snuffle through. I can barely control myself just thinking about it.

All the suffering in Queensland has exposed a divide between what's legal and what's moral - and the emotion behind the debate is threatening to split those same communities that have united in wake of the disasters. Centrelink has a generous payment on offer, with very few prerequisites to access it. But the issue here is: if you are legally able to claim it, aren't you within your rights morally to do that too?

Media's iPad challenge
Two new approaches to making money from journalism over the internet - Rupert Murdoch's iPad app The Daily and Demand Media's tech-heavy attempt at predicting what we want to read - are equally unlikely to succeed.
