PARKING EDITION, February 2011
Dear omss,

The advent of fast food and the microwave redefined our perception of convenience. As technology advances and society evolves our expectations and demands for convenience further increase.

It's the demand for convenience that is helping cell phones make landlines an archaic concept and is positioning the smart phone to replace the basic cell phone. The same demand has spurred a flood of convenient ways to do more on the smart phone's single platform, like browse the internet, manage money, locate parking, or feed and manage parking meters.
The Parking App Infiltration
Did you know there's an app for that?

Did you know that you can search for the closest available parking space on your smart phone? That's right. You can use one of the many applications available today to locate open parking in any area.

Google boasts Open Spot, which works by allowing users who are vacating a space to share that information with people who are searching for available parking. Apple also offers a slew of similar parking navigation applications thru iTunes.

These applications are being taken a step further and being integrated with parking guidance systems (PGS) like McCain's to incorporate available off-street parking, helping identify and communicate every available parking space to motorists.

Pay-by-Phone
Spare change need not apply.

The days of searching for spare change to feed the meter are quickly becoming obsolete. Nowadays most parking meters accept credit cards as an alternate to out-of-date coin collection. But the parking industry is hard at work finding innovative solutions that  supersede both options.

Over the past several years, there has been a surge of companies offering pay-by-phone parking options. Companies like Verrus have you place a cell phone call, while others like Parkmobile boast additional options, such as a mobile application for your smart phone.

Mobile Parking Projects Worth Noting
From San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Citywide projects geared at addressing traffic congestion, air pollution, and promoting the utilization of all available parking spaces include San Francisco and Los Angeles.

San Fancisco launched the SFpark project which provides motorists with real-time parking data collected from sensors and relayed to the public via street signs, smart phone applications, and the SFpark website.

Downtown Los Angeles quickly joined San Francisco's ranks with their pending ExpressPark project, which will feature similar technologies, simplifying the parking process through allowing motorists to locate and pay for available parking via cell phones.
