Sharon D. Banks Award for Humanitarian Leadership in Transportation

The Transportation Research Board is seeking nominations for the Sharon D. Banks Award for Humanitarian Leadership in Transportation . This TRB award, which recognizes excellence in people-oriented initiatives throughout transportation, was inaugurated in 2002 and may be presented biennially. The next presentation of the award will be made during the Chairman's Luncheon on January 25, 2012, during the TRB 91st Annual Meeting.  Nominations must be submitted no later than August 31, 2011.

TRB Webinar: Climate Change Adaptation - Part 1: Climate Adaptation Resources and a State DOT Case Study

TRB will be conducting a web briefing or "webinar" on March 24, 2011, from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. EDT that will explore general threats of climate change to transportation facilities and operations, climate adaptation resources, and specific state planning activities that address the impacts of climate changeParticipants must register at least 24 hours prior to the start of the webinar, space is limited, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees.

2011 TRB Joint Summer Meeting

Join more than 300 transportation professionals expected to participate in the TRB Joint Summer Meeting, July 10-13, 2011, in Boston, Massachusetts. 2011 National Summit for Rural Traffic Safety Culture

TRB is cosponsoring the 2011 National Summit for Rural Traffic Safety Culture on July 11-13, 2011 in Big Sky, Montana. The theme for the summit is Telling a New Prevention Story. Attendees will learn more about the positive community norms model and how it can help practitioners engineer a fundamental and enduring change in driver behavior within the nation's transportation systems.

2011 International Visualization in Transportation Symposium

TRB is sponsoring 2011 International Visualization in Transportation Symposium on August 20-23, 2011, in Chicago, Illinois. The symposium is designed to highlight improving technologies and methods, feature case studies or successful practices, and illuminate the expanding role of visualization in transportation planning, design, construction, maintenance, and data management and analysis.  Individuals or groups wishing to present at the symposium must submit an abstract by April 1, 2011.

Using Census Data for Transportation Applications Conference

TRB is sponsoring the Using Census Data for Transportation Applications Conference on October 25-27, 2011, in Irvine, California. The workshop will focus on the use of census data for transportation applications by exploring the results of current research, providing an opportunity for the sharing of experiences of practitioners who are using census data, and by examining potential strategies for practical improvements in data use for current and emerging data needs.  Individuals or groups wishing to present at the meeting must submit an abstract by March 29, 2011.

2nd Road Dust Best Management Practices Conference

TRB is cosponsoring the 2nd Road Dust Best Management Practices Conference on November 7-9, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference will explore current practices and help to define future needs and research priorities for gravel roads, with a specific focus on the loss of fines in the form of dust. Individuals or groups wishing to make a presentation at the meeting must submit an abstract by April 15, 2011.

TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R26-RR-2: Guidelines for the Preservation of High-Traffic-Volume Roadways explores the state of the practice for preservation treatments on high- and low-volume asphalt and concrete roadways. The report also includes suggested guidelines on the application of preservation treatments on high-volume roadways.

Intelligent Transportation Systems and Vehicle-Highway Automation 2010

TRB's Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2189 contains 12 papers that explore real-time parking information, capability-enhanced probe vehicle surveillance system with vehicle-to-vehicle communications, in-vehicle and infrastructure-based collision warnings to nonviolating drivers, emergency response technology and an integrated active transportation system, and a rural variable speed limit system.

Review of the Development of the Motor Carrier Safety Compliance, Safety, Accountability Program

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a letter report that explores the amount of actual and proposed funding that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has to develop and implement its Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) initiative and how the funding has been used. The report also examines the number of staff FMCSA has employed to develop and implement CSA, and the funding and staffing resources FMCSA anticipates it will need to fully implement CSA going forward. The Florida Department of Transportation has released a report that explores a method to estimate traffic diversion based on the traffic detector and incident data; ways to determine the time lag between incident occurrence and database recording; processes to estimate freeway secondary crashes and potential incident impacts on mobility; and procedures to allow incidents to be classified into categories based on primary incident attributes and impacts. Evaluation of Innovative Bicycle Facilities: SW Broadway Cycle Track and SW Stark/Oak Street Buffered Bike Lanes

The Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation at Portland State University has released a report that explores the impact of two bike lane configurations: a cycle track (a seven-foot bike lane separated from motor vehicle traffic by a row of parked cars and a painted three-foot pedestrian buffer) and a couplet of buffered bike lanes (six-foot bike lanes with a two-foot painted buffer on either side separating them from motor vehicle traffic).
