Getting the water: it's not over yet
Across Australia today many people are still homeless from the flood waters of the past three months. Some are living in tents. Many have no income. Numerous businesses have been destroyed, taking with them the livelihoods of employers and employees. And yet the attention of the nation has apparently moved on. There's a carbon tax debate to be had. Sports buffoons fill our screens nightly. International events occupy some. Life goes on but for many it has stalled.

Boards need diversity, not necessarily women
Women will change the face of corporate Australia, but they must be recruited for the value they bring to their organisations, not just because of their gender.

How things work
The detail of the carbon pricing plan is still to be defined by a process of consultation, research and negotiation. There is nothing else to say.

Converting marks abroad to goals at home
Bob Hawke, John Howard and now Julia Gillard have described their addresses to the United States Congress as the highlights of their political careers. It is an honour bestowed on just a handful of world leaders each year. But what really matters is how all this plays at home. Howard got a three points bounce in his primary vote from 40% to 43%. If Gillard does the same, she and her party will have a primary vote of 33%. There is a hard slog ahead convincing Australians of the need for action on climate change.

To intervene or not to intervene: that is the Libya question
Gaddafi is mowing down his own people, and the US has most powerful military in the history of the world. There's a particularly rusty and nasty-looking nail sticking up right in the middle of the footpath, and the US have this marvellous hammer nearby. What kind of heartless and/or gutless bastard can stand idly by as the bodies pile up? This kind: The one who worries about the myriad unintended consequences of war.

Our Beautiful Sun Looks Like a Peaceful, Furry Egg Yolk

By Casey Chan

Our Beautiful Sun Looks Like a Peaceful, Furry Egg Yolk

Our Beautiful Sun Looks Like a Peaceful, Furry Egg YolkThis amazing picture was taken by Alan Friedman and it shows a side of the Sun that I've never seen before. Look at it, I mean, the Sun's surface looks like milky peach fuzz that'd be so soft to touch—the texture is just incredible. To take the picture, Friedman used:

Alan used a filter that lets through only a very narrow wavelength of light emitted by hydrogen (called Hα for those of you keeping track at home), so this tracks the activity of gas on the solar surface. He also inverts the image of the solar disk (makes it a negative) to increase contrast.

The smoke to the left of the sun is actually leftover material from an erupting sunspot. Seeing the Sun so close and personal makes it easy for us to forget how big it is, Earth is literally a mere dot compared to this beast. [Alan Friedman via Discover]
