[Share]      TRB News Annual Meeting Online Portal: Full 90th Annual Meeting Content Now Available The slides and posters of the more than 3,500 program presentations, and videos of more than 40 high-profile sessions at the 2011 TRB 90th Annual Meeting are now available through the TRB Annual Meeting Online (AMOnline) portal . This content is in addition to the 2,200 papers that make up the meeting's Compendium of Papers, which is already accessible on the portal. In one search, the AMOnline portal allows users to quickly find all available papers, visual aids, and recordings by session, presentation, author, subject area, and more. [More] | [Share]   Using National Household Travel Survey Data for Transportation Decision Making: A Workshop TRB is sponsoring the National Household Travel Survey Data Workshop on June 6-7, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The workshop is designed to focus on the use of NHTS data to inform transportation decision making on key issues such as energy use, congestion, highway finance, and safety. The workshop will feature presentations and discussions on methods, examples, and techniques for using NHTS and other travel survey data to support transportation programs and decisions.  The early bird registration deadline is April 11, 2011. [More] | [Share]   4th Urban Street Symposium* TRB is cosponsoring the 4th Urban Street Symposium on June 24-27, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois. The symposium is designed to explore improvements in suburban and urban street design practices, foster discussions on alternative street design practices, examine alternative street designs, and facilitate the transfer of urban street research findings to state agencies and to local governments. Individuals or groups wishing to make presentation at the meeting must submit an abstract by October 31, 2011. [More] | [Share]   Recent Publications How We Travel: A Sustainable National Program for Travel Data TRB Special Report 304: How We Travel: A Sustainable National Program for Travel Data assesses the current state of travel data at the federal, state, and local levels and defines an achievable and sustainable travel data system that could support public and private transportation decision making. The committee that developed the report recommends the organization of a National Travel Data Program built on a core of essential passenger and freight travel data sponsored at the federal level and well integrated with travel data collected by states, metropolitan planning organizations, transit and other local agencies, and the private sector. [More] | [Share]   Energy and Global Climate Change 2010 TRB's Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2191 contains 22 papers that explore the effect of wide-based single tires on truck fuel efficiency; miles per gallon illusions and corporate average fuel economy distortions; freight transport, energy use, and emissions trends in Spain; diesel truck activity and fuel economy based on electronic control module data; cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles; electric vehicle charging impact on electricity costs; and an economic assessment of electric-drive vehicle operation. [More] | [Share]   Federal Research News SmartPark Truck Parking Availability System: Magnetometer Technology Field Operational Test Results The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released a report that explores the feasibility of using magnetometry to determine truck parking availability. [More]   SmartPark Truck Parking Availability System: Video Technology Field Operational Test Results The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released a report that examines the results of a field operational test of an off-the-shelf video-based traffic monitoring system that was used to monitor parking availability in a public truck parking area. [More]   Traffic Volume Trends: December 2010 The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released the latest issue of Traffic Volume Trends, which is a monthly report based on hourly traffic count data reported by the states. According to the report, travel on all roads and streets increased by 0.6 percent (1.4 billion vehicle miles) in December 2010 as compared with December 2009. Travel for the month is estimated to be 243.4 billion vehicle miles. Cumulative travel for 2010 is up by 0.7 percent (20.5 billion vehicle miles). The cumulative estimate for the year is 2,999.6 billion vehicle miles of travel. [More]   State Research News Incident Response Evaluation Phase 3 The Washington State Department of Transportation has released a report that explores the basic relationship of incidents to delay on Puget Sound, Washington, area freeways. The report examines the amount of delay caused by incidents and the benefits obtained from the incident response actions taken by the Washington State Department of Transportation. [More]   International Research Global Navigation Space Systems: Reliance and Vulnerabilities The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) has released a report that warns that society may already be dangerously over-reliant on satellite radio navigation systems like global positioning satellites. According to the RAE, the range of applications using the technology is now so broad that, without adequate independent backup, signal failure or interference could potentially affect safety systems and other critical parts of the economy.
