TRB's Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-S05-RR-1: Design of the In-Vehicle Driving Behavior and Crash Risk Study provides a summary of the key aspects of the planning effort supporting the SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS). SHRP 2 Safety Project S05: Design of the In-Vehicle Driving Behavior and Crash Risk Study (Study Design) designed the SHRP 2 NDS, which will collect data-on the order of 1 petabyte (1,000 terabytes)-on "naturalistic," or real-world, driving behavior over a two-year period beginning in fall 2010. Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Crash Fatalities in 2010

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released a traffic safety facts sheet that that estimates that 32,788 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2010. This represents a decline of about 3 percent as compared to the 33,808 fatalities that occurred in 2009. [More]  ShareThis 


Alternative Approaches to Funding Highways

The U.S. Congressional Budget Office has released a report that analyzes the effects of alternative approaches to funding highways. In particular, the report compares the effects of current fuel taxes and of possible new taxes on the number of miles highway users drive. [More] ShareThis


Model Performance Measures for State Traffic Records System

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a white paper that highlights a collection of 61 model measures that are designed to help States monitor and improve the quality of the data in their traffic records systems. The measures, which are voluntary, cover all six traffic records systems-crash, driver, vehicle, roadway, citation/adjudication, and emergency management systems/injury surveillance. The white paper also provides basic definitions for the six performance attributes-timeliness, accuracy, completeness, uniformity, integration, and accessibility. [More] ShareThis


An Agency Guide on How to Establish Localized Congestion Mitigation Programs

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Office of Operations has released guidance designed to help state and local transportation personnel develop a formal program for mitigating congestion using localized bottleneck treatments. The guide includes several templates for developing a localized congestion mitigation program, including documenting alternative templates in use by state departments of transportation and Metropolitan Planning Organizations. Integrating Active Traffic and Travel Demand Management: A Holistic Approach to Congestion Management

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Office of International Programs has released a primer that is designed to introduce and define the active traffic management and travel demand management concepts and explore potential benefits of integrating the concepts into efforts to address congestion on the most affected facilities. The primer provides a conceptual framework, originally suggested by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, for understanding the difference between traffic management and travel demand management. Postearthquake Reconnaissance Report on Transportation Infrastructure Impact of the February 27, 2010, Offshore Maule Earthquake in Chile

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released a report that explores the preliminary findings of the a reconnaissance mission to the Maule region of Chile that took place shortly after that region experienced an magnitude 8.8 earthquake in February 2010. The report examines the earthquake's effects on the transportation infrastructure, including bridges and other highway structures that the team visited during the reconnaissance. [More] ShareThis


Review of the Benefits and Tradeoffs of Intercity Passenger and Freight Rail Programs and Policies

The U.S. Government Accountability Office has released a report that examines the extent to which transportation policy tools that provide incentives to shift passenger and freight traffic to rail may generate emissions, congestion, and economic development benefits. The report also explores how project benefits and tradeoffs are assessed for investment in intercity passenger and freight rail and how the strengths and limitations of these assessments impact federal decision making.
