Casey Anthony's defense rested Thursday in her capital murder trial without calling her to the witness stand.

Anthony, 25, is charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008. If convicted of first-degree murder, she could face the death penalty. The trial is in its sixth week.

Jurors will now hear testimony from rebuttal witnesses offered by the prosecution.

CNN Breaking News

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he's canceling July 4 recess for Senate to deal with the debt ceiling crisis.

Lawmakers must raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug. 2. Otherwise, the Treasury will run out of money to pay the nation's bills in full and on time.

Republicans have demanded that any deal to raise the debt ceiling include deep spending cuts, but they have been reluctant to consider measures favored by Democrats that would increase revenue.

A refugee's story: hard to tell
Four months after he touched down in Australia, Clement Saidi says he's finally arrived. But his story almost didn't make it to air. The Immigration Department and the contractors it pays handsomely to manage refugee resettlements seem unwilling to answer questions about inadequate housing, rents well above market rates and suggestions that refugees have been overcharged for repairs and utilities. They do seem to be trying to make it difficult for anyone trying to speak to new refugees about these issues.

Beyond reasonable doubt: respecting the science
The lines of evidence on climate change have converged to support a high degree of confidence that climate is changing and that human activity is a primary cause.

Fairfax, don't turn off the radio
Fairfax Media's decision to jettison its radio assets is short-term thinking and a lost opportunity to create a dynamic, fully integrated multi-platform digital news organisation.

Here we are, middle-aged jazz nuts at a jazz masterclass performance night, when one of the American jazz greats walks onto the stage.

Taking a new look at both sides
One good thing came out of the orgy of Gillard and Rudd anniversary remembrances last week. The 2010 election campaign finally ended. We thought the campaign was over once the independents made their choice - remember all that excited talk about the new paradigm? Yet, by Christmas, it was obvious that Tony Abbott hadn't been listening. He was campaigning around the country as if the next election was only weeks away. Finally it seems as though the 2010 election campaign has ended and a new tone is emerging in the political firmament.

Changing perceptions, changing the world

Changing perceptions, changing the world
Strange though it may seem, a lot of journalists get into the business for the same reason that a lot of politicians do: they want to change the world. But the truth is, journalism or drama that genuinely changes attitudes is very rare. What's remarkable about SBS's recent 'reality' series Go Back To Where You Came From is that it does seem to have changed some people's minds - and not only those who went on the journey it documented.

The war on Western civilisation
Civilisations do end. Dark Ages do descend. We in the West are playing with fire.

A crisis of compassion
Australians are in a bind. On the one hand, we are happy to show compassion to refugees. On the other hand, we are troubled by the idea of 'queue-jumping'.

Secrets of obscenity: the classification riddle
Australian classification laws are in the process of being overhauled, an overhaul which may see their powers increased. But few people know exactly what is currently banned in Australia. As it turns out, much adult content (one of the most popular subjects on the internet) is banned or bannable. There seems a real gap between what is notionally prohibited and what Australians regularly consume. This picture is made all the more baffling by the secretive nature of Australia's obscenity guidelines.

I Wouldn't Be Surprised If the iPhone 5 Looked Like This

By Jesus Diaz

I Wouldn't Be Surprised If the iPhone 5 Looked Like This

I Wouldn't Be Surprised If the iPhone 5 Looked Like ThisThis isn't the iPhone 5. But it wouldn't surprise me if, come this fall, it looks very similar to this prototype created by Antoine Brieux. It feels to me like a natural evolution. Check the gallery.

Apart from making the next generation iPhone a piece of pure glass, this seems like the most logical way to further simplify the current design: One single body of metal encasing the electronics, sandwiched by two slices of curved glass.

That said, I wouldn't like it to look like this. Perhaps only without the glass back, leaving the pure metal, and flushing the glass with the stainless steel body on the front.

But pretty, in any case. Thanks for the renders, Antoine Brieux from NAK Studio.
