Can stronger laws help the homeless find a path home There is no legal mandate requiring that anyone take charge of the homeless and so, systemically, no-one does. The consequences are tragic for those who are left to live outside meaningful connection to society. If we are to not give up on the homeless, we need some form of law that takes as its starting point the idea that living in this way is sufficient intervention, without consent if required. Not a form of law that criminalises homelessness as did the old vagrancy regime, but a form of law that creates the legislated obligation to act to protect, guide and provide a pathway back to society as best as that can be achieved. The new Christmas tradition Has our primary tradition for the Christmas and New Year period become to shop? Have we so devalued Christmas that our measure of the merits or otherwise of a good season is how much money we can splurge on crap that we donÂ't need? How did we get to the point where post-Christmas sales are just a convenient way to shift old stock? A source of hope For many people across Australia, Christmas is a reminder of how things might have been; of disappointment and loss. Perhaps it brings into sharp relief the strained or shattered relationships that are part of life for so many. But the original Christmas story, now so obscured by clamouring consumerism, gaudy lights, and sentimentalised nativity scenes, still contains a message of profound hope. Stop the fear, not the boats What Australia needs most is a new policy to change the attitudes of Australians, not the practices of people smugglers.
