Parliamentary reform: oddities, estimates and loopholes For all its efforts, the 37-page agreement arrived at between the Gillard Government and Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor does nothing to correct one of the strange and enduring oddities of our parliament and executive. Despite the much lauded reforms, the ministers of the Crown who happen to be in the Senate will continue to face far greater scrutiny than ministers who happen to be in the House of Representatives. The cruelty and indignity of mandatory detention As the antipathy towards asylum seekers grows, Australia is reaching a position which allows any cruelty and indignity to be visited upon asylum seekers and their children. Same-sex adoption: a missed opportunity A decision last week has opened the door for gay men and women to adopt children in Victoria, but the discriminatory operation of laws relating to adoption still exist. Gillard looking a lot like Howard She would not like the comparison, but all of a sudden Julia Gillard is looking a lot like John Howard. Gillard's comments in recent days bear a startling resemblance to the phrase "core and non-core promises". You remember that, and who coined the expression? John Howard.
