NSW Liberal leader Barry O'Farrell walks around a shopping centre in Eastgardens, Sydney, on March 21, 2011.

NSW, Libya, Cape York: anyone for a drink?
Abbott is paving the road to Hell in Cape York, Rudd has delivered too little, too late in Libya and NSW is about to introduce a super-sized new government of untried and largely unknown ministers, few of whom have displayed any conspicuous talent for politics. A second intervention in Alice Springs will create many new problems, the point of the Libyan intervention now is less clear, and a new government in New South Wales will be at the mercy of the same public system as the old one.

Apocalyptic hyperbole leaves journalism speechless

Cowboys and Indians: shooting at detainees
How long it will be before we will finally admit that the present way of handling boat people is not working, and that our 'care' for those unfortunate people with families is cruel in the extreme?

US intervention in Libya: the wag the dog myth
That the US dog is clearly wagging a global pro-intervention tail should not be surprising as there are clear reasons why it is in the interests of the United States and its allies to reposition themselves at head of a deeply damaged system of regional domination. Creating the false impression that the United States is being dragged into the Libyan conflict is crucial to the West's plans for the region, but it won't stop further radicalism or hatred of their foreign policies.

Headshot of Julia Gillard on Q and A.

With Gillard battling on many fronts, Liberals dare to hope
With the nation's detention centres unravelling, Rudd and Gillard split over Libya and the carbon tax initiative dangerously stalled, senior Liberals have privately begun to dare to hope, for the first time since the Labor minority government was formed, that Julia Gillard's first term in her own right may be her last. This is not to say they now believe the Government will not go full term. It's just that senior Liberals now believe Gillard's prime ministership may be terminal, a fate that will become clear at the time of the next election.

Short-term solutions give no long-term gain
It's been a big week for global cooperation. First was the "Pact for the Euro", then the Yen and finally the no-fly-zone in Libya.

Atomised information fuels a media meltdown
Nuclear power is scary stuff for most people. The mere mention of it conjures images of Chernobyl, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And this week, those images have been brought back to the fore with the events that are unfolding at the Fukushima Daiici nuclear power plant in Japan. But as someone with a background in science I groan at the hyperbole of some of the speculation and misinformation being spread by the mainstream and social media.

Kevin, um, it seems, ah, we (shuffle) sort of, ah, owe you an apology
Okay: I'll be the first to say it. Sorry, Kevin. After all the fuss about the Foreign Minister imperiously demanding nuclear updates, it's now pretty clear that he was right to do so. After all the intrigue about Kevin's obsession with establishing a no-fly zone over Benghazi, it might now be time to admit the possibility that it was the Foreign Minister who was right all along.

Laying down the law in Lake Tyers
It's an action which is quietly sending shudders through government circles: what to do about an extraordinary and unprecedented political protest in a tiny Indigenous community in Victoria's East Gippsland.
