CNN Breaking News

Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has accused journalists from across Rupert Murdoch's News International media group of trying to illegally obtain private medical information about his family, details of his bank accounts and his phone messages, a source close to Brown told CNN.

Monday's allegation broadens a scandal that brought down Murdoch's News of the World newspaper.

Journalists from The Sun, Murdoch's daily British tabloid, obtained details about Brown's seriously ill son and published a story about him, while people working for the upmarket Murdoch Sunday Times tricked Brown's accountants into handing over financial details, the former prime minister alleges.

News International did not immediately respond to the allegations.

A local News of the World? What's to stop it?
Given the recent events in Britain, and the even more concentrated power of News Limited in the Australian landscape, a new rationale for the regulation of media diversity presses itself upon us. It is not just about making space for a range of voices in public debate, but about maintaining our capacity to hold to account some of the more powerful institutions in the country.

The good, bad and ugly of the carbon tax plan

We want Gough!
In November 1977, at an ALP election rally in Melbourne, the crowd chanted "We want Gough" with a full-throated loyalty and love for the man who had brought hope and optimism to their political experience. It was a chant from people who knew commitment, conviction and belief when they saw it. It was a chant that told of a political leader who wasn't going to persuade everybody but who damn well knew how to persuade them. A third of a century later, which of our current political leaders would dare hope for that?

Carbon price plan: a lucrative affair

Carbon price plan: a lucrative affair
Well, here we are. Tangling, at last with the greatest moral challenge of our generation. 'There have been a few false starts,' conceded the Prime Minister as she presented her scheme yesterday; a rather understated reference to the athletic bipartisan philosophical Karma Sutra that has characterised Australian politics' attempt to come to grips with this problem in the last four years. But we're moving forward now, and the Prime Minister gave a commanding performance yesterday as she outlined - finally - her Government's plan for meeting this impending environmental and economic crisis.

Carbon tax for the price of a broken promise
Australia's latest, and probably its last, climate change scheme is the child of a marriage between unstoppable bureaucratic momentum and political desperation.

A policy failure on three fronts... and counting
When evaluating policy, there are three important questions to consider. Will the policy work? Will there be perverse outcomes? Will it benefit consumers? The carbon tax fails all three tests.

Low and slow: what's the point?
Better to feel you are doing good rather than actually do good, seems to be the message with the Government's carbon tax.

A tax and welfare package as much as an environmental plan
After labouring for months, the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee has brought forth a tax and welfare package as much as an environmental policy. With significant implications for the welfare sector, and tax cuts for everyone earning up to $80,000 a year, in the short term the carbon tax may not be the most important effect of the governmentÂ's plan. Politically, as Tony Abbott was quick to point out this afternoon, the government may suffer the Â"death of a thousand cameosÂ" as individual case studies come to light. The battle has at last begun.
