October Fire Prevention Celebration

Celebrate National Fire Prevention Week!  October 3-9, 2010

Fire Safety Newsletter – October 2010

TOPIC:  National Fire Prevention Week:  Oct. 3-9, 2010

National Fire Prevention Week happens this time each year, to recognize the “Great Chicago Fire” which took place on October 8, 1871.

This year’s theme is:

Beep! Beep! Beep! Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with

Smoke alarms save lives and should be in every home.  Working smoke alarms cut the chances of dying in a fire in half!  While almost all homes in the U.S. have at least one smoke alarm, roughly 70% of reported home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or inoperable smoke alarms!

Safety Tips:

  • Test all alarms at least once a month
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year (unless powered by a 10 year Lithium battery)
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if necessary
  • Install alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, including the basement.
  • If the alarm is near a cooking appliance, use an ionization alarm with a hush-button or a photoelectric alarm.
  • Never remove the batteries as a means to silence a smoke alarm due to cooking or other nuisances.  Replace any smoke detectors prone to nuisance alarms with smoke detectors with a “hush” feature.
