Criticism of Behrendt hides political agenda
It may be worthwhile to find out just why Larissa Behrendt sees Bess Price's comments on the Northern Territory Intervention to be so offensive. When someone defends the Northern Territory Intervention, they are advocating in favour of racial discrimination. This is outrageous and offensive, regardless of the fact that Labor and the Coalition both support it.

Memo Paul Howes: reform means change. Sorry.
The AWU secretary Paul Howes is speaking out strongly against a carbon tax. Howes's line, apparently, is that the industries in which his members work should be insulated forever from the real economy. Meanwhile the Registered Clubs Association has mounted a campaign against poker machine reform. Once again they are claiming that the sky will fall if anything is done to restrain their privileged position. But these groups want your money and they couldn't give a damn about the community.

Carbon tax battle: bureaucracy v business
It is becoming clear the Gillard Government's carbon tax is virtually identical to the Rudd government's CPRS, at least as far as businesses are concerned. The Canberra bureaucracy spent 18 months designing the CPRS and, understandably from their point of view, sees no need to start again. It is very unlikely they will be able to successfully bring in a carbon tax with the support of no-one but the bureaucracy and the academy.

Australia in the cold on global warming
But to urge Australians, who account for only 1.4 per cent of global emissions, to lead the world in slashing greenhouse gases in the aforementioned environment is heady stuff: the sort of thing that Sir Humphrey would have described as 'very brave, minister'. It is also economically reckless. It's a good time to see how the big polluting nations are faring in the battle to price carbon. So far, not so good.

Carbon, pokies, deficit... now a fight with the army
Defence Minister Stephen Smith is wrestling with the leadership of Australia's Defence Force. The scale of the fight has one key principle: civilians control the military. That point seems to be lost on some commanders in the ADF, who apparently believe that the correct role for their Minister is compliant figurehead. Stephen Smith has picked a worthy fight. But maybe declaring war on the military is a fight too far for the Gillard Government.
