The 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast on Tuesday, August 22, struck with no warning. However, as forecasters watch Hurricane Irene churn its way up the coast, there is time to prepare.   After Hurricane Isabel in 2003, first responders were not able to reach some households right away. According to local emergency planners, there are three basic items that will help your family manage until help arrives or conditions return to normal.   WATER Have at least one gallon of water per day for each member of your household, for a minimum of three days. That's at least three gallons per person. Pets will require additional water.   FLASHLIGHTS Crank- or battery-operated lights will ward off darkness in case of a power failure. Local fire officials advise against using candles as a source of light.   RADIO A battery- or crank-operated radio will be your primary source of information if the power fails.   Here are some other things to consider in the days before Hurricane Irene - or any kind of emergency -- strikes: If your emergency lights and radio are battery-operated, make sure you have an ample supply of the right batteries. Keep your cell phone, laptop and the other electronic devices you rely on fully charged. Fill your gas tank. Refill prescription medications if necessary. Stock up on personal care items, especially for family members with special needs. Check your supply of non-perishable food that could be prepared without electricity. Keep a manual can opener where you can find it. If you have landline phones at home, at least one should be a fully corded phone that plugs into a phone jack. Cordless phones require electricity, and won't work if the power fails. I seem to last with my knees the day right after i’ve done a few miles on my exercising bike and crosstrainer…would a knee help assist? Any warm up tactics or suggestions? I do the above as it is less influence on my joints
