International Conference on Commercial Driver Health and Wellness

TRB is sponsoring the International Conference on Commercial Driver Health and Wellness on November 8-10, 2010, in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference will feature papers, presentations, posters, and discussion panels concerning impacts of health factors on commercial driver job safety and performance. 2011 Joint Rail Conference: Shared Corridors, Shared Interests*

TRB is cosponsoring the 2011 Joint Rail Conference: Shared Corridors, Shared Interests on March 16-18, 2011, in Pueblo, Colorado. With funding provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for high-speed and intercity passenger rail as the backdrop, the conference will focus on critical details related to improving existing services on the United States vast and largely private railroad network. The conference will explore railroad infrastructure, rail equipment, signal and train control engineering, service quality and operations research, planning and development, and safety and security. Combined 13th Annual Harbor Safety Committees and Area Maritime Security Committees Conference*

TRB is cosponsoring the Combined 13th Annual Harbor Safety Committee (HSCs) and Area Maritime Security Committees Conference (AMSCs) in May or June 2011, in Houston, Texas. The combined event provides an opportunity for the committees to engage in information exchange on current challenges, best practices, case studies, and lessons learned. The conference offers the opportunity for the committees to engage both public- and private-sector leaders on issues relating to marine transportation and harbor safety and security. The Comprehensive Costs of Highway-Rail At-Grade Crossing Crashes

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has issued a request for proposals to develop a categorization scheme for comprehensively describing costs associated with highway-rail at-grade crossing collisions. The project will also estimate the cost magnitudes in recent experience and create an analytical framework for developing a model or set of models for forecasting these costs. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released a guidebook that includes an overview of the mission and functions of Transportation Management Centers, Emergency Operations Centers, and Fusion Centers. Assuring Bridge Safety and Serviceability in Europe

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Office of International Programs has released a report on a scanning study of Europe that focused on identifying best practices and processes designed to help assure bridge safety and serviceability. The Effectiveness of ABS in Heavy Truck Tractors and Trailers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's National Center for Statistics and Analysis has released a report that explores crash data from seven states and estimates that antilock breaking systems (ABS) on the truck tractor unit reduces police-reported crashes involving air-braked tractor-trailers by about 3 percent. Automated Visual Inspection/Detection of Railroad Track

The Florida Department of Transportation has released a report that explores the technical details behind the implementation of a visual inspection system for railroad tracks in Florida.
