A most unfortunate declaration of war During the 2007 election campaign, Samantha Maiden of The Australian phoned and asked me to contribute to an article about Kevin Rudd's attempts to manipulate the media. Unfortunately, what I revealed to her was taken out of context and the next day a story ran under the headline: Cassidy declares war on Rudd. That's how the declaration of war before the election came about. Quiet diplomacy: that's the Commonwealth way In my experience, turning a blind eye to human rights abuses is not a new problem for the Commonwealth. Stimulated but unemployed in the USA The US corporate sector has not been playing ball in the government's stimulus strategy. Dealing with drug addiction For all the dysfunctionality of NSW these days, that state is the Australian leader on dealing with drug addiction. Afghanistan: we need an honest debate The recent fracas between Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard over their respective trips to Afghanistan was uninteresting and slightly pathetic. What we really need is an honest parliamentary debate on Afghanistan which asks difficult questions, does not shy away from complexity or reach easy conclusions. But whether this is possible in the current toxic political atmosphere is yet to be seen. |
