2011 TRB 90th Annual Meeting: Compendium of Papers Now Available Online!

The TRB 90th Annual Meeting  Compendium of Papers is now available online. Anyone can view the nearly 2,200 papers available in the online compendium prior to the Annual Meeting. In addition, TRB Annual Meeting registrants may view and download papers now. The new online compendium replaces the compact disc version that has been produced in the past. 2011 TRB 90th Annual Meeting: Register Online Throughout the Meeting

For the first time, TRB's online registration site will remain open during the meeting. The site will close when the Annual Meeting registration desks close at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26. To help ensure fast processing when you pick up your name badge and program, please bring a copy of the confirmation email or the confirmation number with you to any of the Annual Meeting Registration desks at the Marriott Wardman Park, Washington Hilton, or Omni Shoreham hotels. 2011 TRB 90th Annual Meeting: Ride Share Website

TRB, in cooperation with RideAmigos Corp, has established a ride-sharing website for attendees traveling to and from hotels within the TRB block. This pilot service is designed to help attendees be more eco-friendly and reduce congestion when traveling to and from the TRB Annual Meeting.

HMCRP FY 2011 Projects: Oversight Panel Nominee Solicitation

TRB's Hazardous Materials Cooperative Research Program (HMCRP) is soliciting nominations of individuals to serve on oversight panels for new projects being established under HMCRP's fiscal year 2011 program. Nominees should have expertise directly relevant to the proposed project topic. To help identify candidates who are members of historically underrepresented groups, TRB encourages the nomination of women and members of minority groups. Panels for the new research projects are scheduled to meet starting in April 2011. Panel members are prohibited from submitting or participating in preparation of proposals on projects under their jurisdiction. A preliminary description of the FY 2011 projects, additional information on the nomination process, and a link to the nomination form are available online. Nominations are due by February 4, 2011. Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) Now Accepting Funding Proposals

The Program Announcement for TRB's Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) explains the IDEA programs, describes the two types of eligible projects and their funding structures, suggests general areas for which IDEA proposals can be submitted, and provides guidelines and forms for submitting proposals.  The IDEA programs provide start-up funding for promising, but unproven, innovations in surface transportation systems. The programs' goals are to seek out and support new transportation solutions that are unlikely to be funded through traditional sources. Highway IDEA, Reliability IDEA, and Safety IDEA proposals for the next review cycle are due March 1, 2011. Transit IDEA proposals for the next review cycle are due April 1, 2011. 10th International Conference on Low-Volume Roads

TRB is sponsoring the 10th International Conference on Low-Volume Roads on July 24-27, 2011, in Lake Buena Vista (Orlando), Florida. The conference, held every four years, is designed to foster communication about new and innovative ways of building, maintaining, and managing low-volume road systems between practitioners worldwide in local, state, and federal agencies; universities; private firms; and international organizations. Papers from authors wishing to present at the conference are due by March 31, 2010. Papers are sought which offer a pragmatic perspective that can be applied by practitioners. Case studies, best practice reviews, and experience-based reports of innovative practices that may not be research, per se, are welcome at this conference. The preliminary program is now available, and the registration and hotel reservations processes are now open. European Transport Conference*

TRB is cosponsoring the European Transport Conference on October 11-13, 2011, in Glasgow, Scotland. The conference is designed to offer in-depth presentations on policy issues, research findings, and best practices across a broad spectrum of transportation modes.  Individuals or groups interested in presenting a paper or making a presentation at the meeting must submit an abstract by February 4, 2011.   Information on how to submit an abstract is available online. 2012 International Conference on Winter Maintenance and Surface Transportation Weather

TRB is sponsoring the 2012 International Conference on Winter Maintenance and Surface Transportation Weather on April 30-May 3, 2012, in Iowa City, Iowa. The meeting is designed to help improve snow removal and ice control operations and the application of weather information in transportation agencies by providing a forum for the exchange of information on the state of the art and state of the practice in winter maintenance research and technology applications. Intelligent compaction uses continuous compaction-roller vibration monitoring to assess mechanistic soil properties, continuous modification/adaptation of roller vibration amplitude and frequency to ensure optimum compaction, and full-time monitoring by an integrated global positioning system to provide a complete GPS-based record of the compacted area. Traffic Safety Facts 2009: Early Edition

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released the Early Edition of its Traffic Safety Facts 2009 report. The report includes current 2009 data and final 2008 data. The report contains exposure data and other data points that customarily are not available until later. Characteristics of Law Enforcement Officer's Fatalities in Motor Vehicle Crashes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a report that summarizes the characteristics of law enforcement officers' fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes using the Fatality Analysis Report System data from 1980 to 2008. [More] ShareThis 


State Alcohol-Impaired Driving Estimates

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a fact sheet that includes estimates of alcohol involvement in fatal crashes for the United States and individually for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico for calendar year 2009 and for calendar year 2000 as a comparison. Transportation Services Index: November 2010

The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics' Transportation Services Index (TSI) fell 0.1 percent in November, the latest month available, to 102.1. The TSI measures the movement of freight and passengers. The index, which is seasonally adjusted, combines available data on freight traffic, as well as passenger travel, that have been weighted to yield a monthly measure of transportation services output. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Research and Innovative Technology Administration, has released its annual statistical report on the U.S. transportation system.
