DRIVE LIKE THEIR LIVES DEPEND ON IT!  BE STREET SMART

Safety campaign launches this week in Howard County, Continues in Baltimore City

You have probably witnessed firsthand, either as a pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorist, the dangers that exist at intersections and on streets in and around Baltimore. Each year, the Baltimore region averages 1,700 pedestrian and 500 bicycle crashes, resulting in an average of 52 fatalities.

Street Smart 2011 - Howard County PSA

Street Smart PSA featuring County Executive Ken Ulman and Police Chief William McMahon

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council is proud to partner with area law enforcement agencies and the State Highway Administration to bring you its annual StreetSmart campaign. Designed to raise awareness of the rules that protect our most vulnerable road users, StreetSmart is helping reduce the number of crashes that involve pedestrians and bicyclists.

Enforcement is being stepped up. For example, pedestrians can and will be cited for failure to use a cross walk, cyclists will be cited for failure to obey signals, and drivers will be cited for not stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk or not allowing three feet of distance when following passing a bicyclist.

It is your responsibility to know and follow the laws - and to use common sense and courtesy. So, whether you are driving, walking, or biking, keep these safety tips in mind:

Drivers

Remember that streets are shared by everyone, not just motorized vehicles

  • Follow all traffic laws, including stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Allow at least three feet of space when passing a bicyclist
  • Be vigilant at all times, don't speed and don't drive distracted or impaired
  • Remember that pedestrians and cyclists - particularly the very young and very old - can be unpredictable and it is your responsibility to drive safely around them.

Pedestrians & Bicyclists

Remember that respect and cooperation are two-way streets

  • Obey traffic signals and signs and take common-sense precautions
  • Wear bright colors and reflective clothing at night
  • Avoid distractions and don't walk or bike under the influence
  • Be aware that road conditions may make it difficult to see you and drivers may not do everything they're supposed to, so walk or ride defensively

Together, we can all make pedestrians and bicyclists safer on our roads by being StreetSmart!

COMMENTS WELCOME ON MD 32 PROJECT IN HOWARD COUNTY

Comments welcome on TIP amendment through Friday, July 1st

Open For Public Review

The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board is currently welcoming public feedback on the following amendment to the 2011 - 2014 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). A summary of the project is below, with full details available by clicking on the link provided.

MD 32 - Wellworth Way Access Management Improvements

The Maryland State Highway Administration has asked that $886,000 be added to the 2011-14 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) to purchase right-of-way for improvements to MD 32 in Howard County. Private driveways that now have direct access to MD 32 will be relocated to Wellworth Way, a private road. This will make it safer for residents to enter and leave their driveways, and will improve the flow of traffic on the highway.

A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department.  Comments are welcome on this amendment through Friday, July 1, 2011.
