Communicating Transportation Information During Emergency Situations to John and Jane Q. Public

The TRB Technical Activities Division's Planning and Environment Group is holding its fifth annual competition to find top methods for communicating transportation concepts to non-professional audiences. Entries, which should focus on best practices in communicating transportation information to the public during emergency situations, are due by August 5, 2011. TRB Webinar: Six Top Road Safety Papers from the 2011 Annual Meeting

TRB will conduct a web seminar or "webinar" on August 3, 2011, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EDT that will feature brief presentations on six 2011 Annual Meeting papers nominated for the Patricia Waller Award for the best paper in road safety.  Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees. Webinar: Advancing Technologies for Working with Underground Utilities: Current SHRP 2 Research

TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), is hosting a webinar on August 10, 2011, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM EDT that will explore four active SHRP 2 utility-related research projects to increase the awareness of SHRP 2 utility-related research among the intended users of the research products and to solicit their feedback. There is no fee for this webinar; however, participants must register in advance of the session. No Professional Development Hours will be provided for this webinar. TRB Webinar: Railroad - DOT Institutional Mitigation Strategies

TRB, in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), will conduct a web seminar or "webinar" on August 31, 2011, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EDT on a project developed by TRB's second Strategic Highway Program (SHRP 2) that explores the report, Strategies for Improving the Project Agreement Process between Highway Agencies and Railroads . Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is no fee for registrants.  The webinar has a Professional Development Hour (PDH) value of 1. 2012 Joint Rail Conference: Technology to Advance the Future of Rail Transport

TRB is cosponsoring the 2012 Joint Rail Conference: Technology to Advance the Future of Rail Transport, April 17 - 19, 2012, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this conference is to promote the dissemination of information and discussion of technological advances relevant to railroad operational and engineering issues and other matters.  Topics to be discussed include railroad infrastructure, rail equipment, signal and train control engineering, planning and development, safety and security, energy efficiency and sustainability, and urban passenger rail transport. Map of SHRP 2 Activities: June 2011

TRB's Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) has released a map that highlights the 24 states that are participating in some 50 SHRP 2 activities. The varied activities include the naturalistic driving study, pilot tests, field tests, and demonstration projects. 6th International Symposium on Highway Capacity and Quality of Service

Traffic Volume Trends: May 2011

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released the latest issue of Traffic Volume Trends, which is a monthly report based on hourly traffic count data reported by the states. According to the report, travel on all roads and streets decreased by 1.9 percent (-5.0 billion vehicle miles) in May 2011 as compared with May 2010. Travel for the month is estimated to be 254.0 billion vehicle miles. Cumulative travel for 2011 is down by 1.0 percent (-11.7 billion vehicle miles). The cumulative estimate for the year is 1,193.6 billion vehicle miles of travel. [More] ShareThis
