2012 TRB 91st Annual Meeting: Spotlight Theme

The spotlight theme for the 91st Annual Meeting is Transportation: Putting Innovation and People to Work. Spotlight sessions, workshops, and discussions at the 2012 TRB Annual Meeting will highlight how research leads to innovation in transportation services and products, and how this in turn can stimulate the economy, create jobs, and attract students to the transportation profession.

7th Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics: SURF 2012*

TRB is cosponsoring the 7th Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics: SURF 2012 on September 19-22, 2012, in Norfolk, Virginia. The primary focus of the symposium is to explore the state-of-the-art of the scientific knowledge in the area of surface characteristics and pavement and tire interaction on roads and airfields. In addition, SURF is designed to be a forum to share and disseminate information on the latest technological developments for the collection of data, quality control, and statistical validation, and on the use of the data in infrastructure management systems. The deadline for  submission of abstracts by individuals and groups wishing to present at the symposium has been extended to August 31, 2011.

Improving Roadway Safety Programs Through University-Agency Partnerships: A Conference

TRB with the support of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration is sponsoring Improving Roadway Safety Programs Through University-Agency Partnerships: A Conference on November 2-3, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The focus of this conference will be university-transportation agency partnerships for safety and the role these partnerships can play in helping to develop the analytical and workforce expertise needed to support new roadway safety analysis, research, programs, and cultural tools. Early bird registration rates expire September 3, 2011.

Fatigue in Transit Operations: A Symposium

TRB is sponsoring the Fatigue in Transit Operations: A Symposium October 12-13, 2011, in Washington, D.C., to explore the nature of, and risks posed by, transit operator fatigue and related sleep hygiene issues. The conference will feature presentations on the status of research relating to fatigue in transit operations, explore other current research, and help identify promising directions for future research.  Advance registration expires September 9, 2011.

Using Census Data for Transportation Applications Conference

TRB is sponsoring the Using Census Data for Transportation Applications Conference on October 25-27, 2011, in Irvine, California. The workshop will focus on the use of census data for transportation applications by exploring the results of current research, providing an opportunity for the sharing of experiences of practitioners who are using census data, and by examining potential strategies for practical improvements in data use for current and emerging data needs.  Advance registration rates expire September 24, 2011.

Traffic Volume Trends: June 2011


The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released the latest issue of Traffic Volume Trends, which is a monthly report based on hourly traffic count data reported by the states. According to the report, travel on all roads and streets decreased by 1.4 percent (-3.8 billion vehicle miles) in June 2011 as compared with June 2010. Travel for the month is estimated to be 259.1 billion vehicle miles. Cumulative travel for 2011 is down by 1.1 percent (-15.5 billion vehicle miles). The cumulative estimate for the year is 1,452.7 billion vehicle miles of travel. [More] ShareThis
