WTOP BREAKING NEWS Two people have been killed in Virginia when trees toppled by Irene fell on an apartment building and a car.
Thousands of flights have been canceled, grounding passengers from North Carolina to Boston. All New York City-area airports shut down to arriving flights as of noon Saturday, which is also when the city's public transportation system shut down.
D.C.'s Metro is running on its regular weekend schedule.
