2012 TRB 91st Annual Meeting: Now Accepting Associated Groups' Function Space Requests

TRB is taking requests for function space from non-profit organizations and government agencies that would like to hold meetings in conjunction with the TRB 91st Annual Meeting January 22-26, 2012, in Washington, DC. Qualifying organizations wishing to hold meetings, and food and beverage events at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park, Omni Shoreham, and Washington Hilton hotels must agree to follow the  TRB Request for Function Space Guidelines and complete the online Request for Function Space Form. Only requests submitted via this form will be accepted and the priority processing deadline for forms is October 7, 2011.

TRB with the support of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration is sponsoring Improving Roadway Safety Programs Through University-Agency Partnerships: A Conference on November 2-3, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The focus of this conference will be university-transportation agency partnerships for safety and the role these partnerships can play in helping to develop the analytical and workforce expertise needed to support new roadway safety analysis, research, programs, and cultural tools. Advance registration expires October 3, 2011.

Fatigue in Transit Operations: A Symposium


TRB is sponsoring the Fatigue in Transit Operations: A Symposium October 12-13, 2011, in Washington, D.C., to explore the nature of, and risks posed by, transit operator fatigue and related sleep hygiene issues. The conference will feature presentations on the status of research relating to fatigue in transit operations, explore other current research, and help identify promising directions for future research.

2nd Road Dust Best Management Practices Conference*

TRB is cosponsoring the 2nd Road Dust Best Management Practices Conference on November 7-9, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference will explore current practices and help to define future needs and research priorities for gravel roads, with a specific focus on the loss of fines in the form of dust. Registration forms must be postmarked by October 17, 2011 in order to be eligible for the early, discount registration fee.

Emergency Medical Services Systems, Safety Strategies and Solutions Summit

TRB is sponsoring the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Systems, Safety Strategies, and Solutions Summit February 29, 2012, in Washington, D.C.  This will be a one-day workshop reviewing the state of the art in transportation safety in EMS operations. Ongoing research and research needs statements in this area will be reviewed and discussed. This summit is not designed to address issues such as patient care. Best Practices in GIS-Based Asset Management

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has issued a request for proposals to develop guidance for how state departments of transportation and other transportation agencies can enhance their asset-management capabilities through effective adoption of geographic information systems (GIS) technologies and encourage more extensive adoption of GIS technologies by conducting pilot demonstrations and workshops on implementation of GIS-based asset management. Proposals are due November 11, 2011.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Web-Only Document 180: Producing Transportation Data Products from the American Community Survey That Comply With Disclosure Rules explores approaches to apply data perturbation techniques that will provide Census Transportation Planning Products data users complete tables that are accurate enough to support transportation planning applications, but that also are modified enough that the Disclosure Review Board is satisfied that they prevent effective data snooping.

Operational Effects of Geometrics and Access Management: 2011

TRB's Transportation Research Record, Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2223 includes 14 papers that explore intersection design practices, two-lane rural highways, operational improvements as an alternative to traditional highway construction, travel time evaluation of a u-turn facility, operational characteristics of super 2 highways in Texas, development and validation of speed kidney as a new traffic-calming device, and driver behavior on speed-change lanes at freeway ramp terminals.

Austroads has released a report that explores the extent to which a pre-existing medical condition or acute medical event was a contributing factor in crash causation for a representative sample of casualty crashes. Safe Kids USA has released a report that summarizes data collected on Safe Kids USA checklists at CR checkup events and appointments between October 1, 2009, and September 30, 2010.
