West Atlas oil rig.

Evidence destroyed: the luckiest oil spill
When the West Atlas rig haemorrhaged oil for 74 days last year, no-one was killed and according to the Government and the oil company the environmental damage has been minimal. "The fact is we were lucky with Montara" said Resources Minister Ferguson when he tabled the Montara Commission of Inquiry last week. But leafing through the report there is a strange feeling they were in a parallel universe to that inhabited by the inquiry's commissioner.

The offer made by The Oz's editor-in-chief to Julie Posetti via a lawyer's letter is, to my mind, quite simply bizarre.

Go FIFA yourself Qatar. We never wanted it anyway
Expect us not to make too much of this after today. The demise of Australia's bid for the right to "organise" the 2022 FIFA World Cup is a deep humiliation and these things are best left quickly behind us. One vote. One vote from a possible 22. And we even sent Mark Arbib. Could it be that FIFA sensed that our national heart wasn't really in this?

This Is Where the WikiLeaks Servers Are Now

This Is Where the WikiLeaks Servers Are NowPressured by the US government, their leader chased by the Interpol and kicked off their servers by Amazon, Wikileaks is on the run. But fear not: The organization has found a new refuge, according to Gizmodo France. Updated.

The real climate change challenge

The real climate change challenge
Our current political thinking on emissions reduction is laughable; it is high time we faced up to reality and stopped playing political games. Quite apart from the risks to which we are exposed, Australia is rapidly falling behind other countries in the race to develop a low-carbon economy.  It is no longer a question of losing competitiveness because we are taking action, but rather because we are not.

Well-readhead: the year's best
Like an ageing rocker with no new hits and a great back catalogue, releasing a "best of" compilation is just too easy an opportunity to pass up.

The ends of information
We've all been busy connecting to one another, without much thought of what it feels like to live in such a hyperconnected world.

Psst... secrets aren't that important
Secret information is not necessarily a better guide to events than what we already know from open sources.

Culture cringe and fever pitch
Australia has plenty working against us when it comes to buying in international events like the FIFA World Cup. To counter our shortcomings, we exploit that knock-about, larrikin spirit we're known for - with just a dash of naivety for good measure - and shunning slick and corporate, we offer natural splendour and wildlife. This, after all, is our default position.
