Events can take place in a small capacity or be cosmically altering and the parking industry is no exception. Although developments might not have been prime time breaking news, some parking industry reports were impressive enough to make national headlines. In the spirit of year-end reflection, we made a list, checked it twice, and want to review some 2010 industry news and events with you. 2010: Parking Industry at a Glance 2010 brought about serious street credit for the parking industry. Free Parking Debate: The industry followed the very public Shoup/O'Toole dispute over the real cost of "free parking." Their internet argument made national headlines, and the city of San Francisco took action with a proposed test of the Shoup model. Technology Invasion: Since its debut, parking via mobile device has become all the rage. There was a flood of mobile phone parking applications to help drivers locate and pay for available parking, Google launched Open Spot, and Apple offers TakeMySpot and ParKit, just to name a few. Going Green: Environmentally friendly initiatives took headlines by storm. Solar panel covered parking structures got noticed in Scottsdale, AZ at Prudential Financial, Inc., and a new parking structure at Dallas International Airport announced its intentions to be the "greenest" in parking. Project Funding: Speaking of green sustainability programs, parking projects like the Abington Memorial Hospital gained grants and stimulus funds in 2010 by working to reduce their environmental impact through retrofitting. 2010: McCain at a Glance 2010 also marked a year of great advancements for McCain's parking solutions products. The University of San Diego Partnership: We entered an agreement with the University of San Diego (USD) to provide stress-free parking, by helping direct motorists to available spaces with our parking guidance system. Product Upgrades: Continuing industry leadership, ground-breaking updates were made to some of our product offerings. Ultrasonic Sensors: Encased entire unit, resulting in an advanced, water-resistant device. Embedded Sensors: Redesigned the shell, which resulted in a more robust, stronger casing. Guidance Signs: Launched a full line of wayfinding and parking guidance dynamic messaging signs (DMS). 2011: What the Future Holds 2010 was a great year for the parking industry and 2011 already looks promising with the emergence and growth of electric vehicle (EV) technology, which will create exciting new business opportunities in the parking sector. And collective efforts to continue seeking green, sustainable solutions will also provide new prospects in the new year.
