Opposition Leader Tony Abbott slams the Labor Government's plans for a carbon tax at a rally in Canberra.

A man is known by the company he keeps
My mother used to have a homely saying for it: "Tell me who your friends are, and IÂ'll tell you who you are." If this adage is to be applied to the events of last week, it would appear that Tony Abbott is raving ratbag, a ranting bigot whose ignorance of science is matched only by his lack of manners.

Media Watch: Everyone loves it until they push censorship
On last week's Media Watch, host Jonathan Holmes called for the government to use a practically defunct regulation to restrict free speech because he disagreed with the content of that speech. By asking for the legal system to intervene in a vigorous public debate Media Watch has conclusively demonstrated that on the right to free speech, it's one of the bad guys.

We have more to fear from waves than radiation
More than 10,000 people have died in the Japanese tsunami and the survivors are cold and hungry. But the media concentrate on the nuclear radiation from which no-one has died - and are unlikely to.

Gillard, Keneally at odds over OHS deal

A death in the family that leaves Gillard healthier
Labor's defeat in NSW will strengthen the position of Julia Gillard. For now. Too much change was one lesson for Labor in the NSW debacle. There were others that may come to haunt the federal ALP brand, but for now, fear will entrench PM Gillard. Conservatives are hoping that will be too little, way too late.

Bitten by a sock puppet, but the climate is still changing
There is a dark underbelly to the internet, Alene Composta was created by the sad folk who dwell there. The use of sock puppets has become a propaganda tool in Australia and surely there are ethical issues that arise when someone impersonates a distressed and disabled person for their own purposes. Fortunately, there is much that we can learn from this episode.

How old is too old for a nuclear reactor?
One reason the Japanese industry puts forward for extending the lives of reactors is the resistance that has been growing to building nuclear power stations in Japan — people are so opposed to new plants, the old ones have to work longer. That means plants that can run for 60 years although the World Nuclear Association says they most in operation were designed to work only for 30.

Sovereign wealth sounds fine in theory
While there may be good arguments for a sovereign wealth fund, there are some important caveats as well. Tax revenues are growing sharply, thanks to the resources boom.  But under the Gillard government, spending is up even more sharply. Before we can even consider a sovereign wealth fund, we must restore fiscal discipline.

Make no mistake: this is a battle to the death
The carbon tax debate has become a mere cipher in the titanic struggle between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott as they fight to tear each other's innards out. The personal has become the political. It is now clear that the loser of this battle will also lose their leadership or, in the case of Gillard, the Prime Ministership. It is now simply that important.
