Voters will cure the NSW disease
Rarely in the political life of Australia do we witness voters in a retributive rage. Such a phenomenon appears to be occurring right now in the state of New South Wales. In spite of concerns that Barry O'Farrell's Liberal-Nationals Coalition may not be the complete answer to the profound problems facing the state, an overwhelming number of voters now seem psychologically prepared to do the dirty work.

Has Australian politics ever been more depressing?
If the polls are to be believed both major parties are now led by people we find increasingly distasteful, so much so that we would far rather return to their predecessors – the men dumped by their respective factional bosses.

Sentimentality vs strategy: seeking influence in the USA
When recent Australian prime ministers have visited Washington DC, and met with US presidents, they have taken one of two approaches: the Howard/Gillard approach and the Keating/Rudd approach. Which best serves Australia's interests?

What forestry can do for climate change policy
Growing trees is nature's way of absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. So most would assume that the forest industry would be front and centre of the government's climate change policy. So why is this industry being ignored?

How to make friends and wow Americans
If Julia Gillard began the trip with a perceived weakness on foreign policy, she has demonstrated she can effectively stride the international stage and make friends in high places. There's no denying that - to all outward appearances at least - she has managed to establish a warm rapport with the Americans and put her stamp on the relationship with Australia's most important ally. The Prime Minister's camp is clearly delighted.

Hope for Japan's economy in the face of disaster
I visited Kobe not long after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit that city in January 1995 and could not imagine how any city, or country, could recover from what I saw. That earthquake is still listed as the costliest natural disaster to befall any country. Kobe never recovered its position as Japan's premier shipping port and one of the world's busiest, but the economic impact of that earthquake was limited and short-lived.

The junk science behind Minchin's climate change denial
Politicians usually want to be seen as tough-minded iconoclasts who boldly go where evidence leads them. In this case, there is no evidence to support him.

As we sit and watch, what would we change?
None of our wealth or reason is enough to save us it seems when nature - either unbalanced or coolly in its cosmic stride - picks a time and place to run riot.

The key is consistency, Labor is lacking
Political advocacy is about believing something, and setting out to bring a majority around to your point of view. In the best political advocates, principle and determination work together to the extent that even voters who fundamentally disagree with their position on a particular policy stance will grudgingly support them anyway. Federal Labor is a long way from that right now, thanks to the messages it has sent out to the electorate on a number of issues.

Public media: get sharp or get knifed
Wake up, public media people! You have no magic exemption from the requirements of political maturity. There are people out there who seek your destruction, and they are not evenly distributed.
