Highway Capacity Manual 2010

TRB is pleased to announce the publication of the fifth edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM2010) and is taking pre-orders for the publication, which is expected to be released in April. HCM2010, which updates HCM2000, will significantly enhance how engineers and planners assess the traffic and environmental effects of highway projects by:
• providing an integrated multimodal approach to the analysis and evaluation of urban streets from the points of view of automobile drivers, transit passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians;
• addressing the proper application of micro-simulation analysis and the evaluation of those results;
• examining active traffic management in relation to both demand and capacity; and
• exploring specific tools and generalized service volume tables, to assist planners in quickly sizing future facilities.

Findings from the Transportation Research Board's 2010 State Partnership Visits Program

Each year, TRB's Technical Activities Division staff visit state departments of transportation, as well as selected universities, transit and other modal agencies, and industry organizations, to determine the issues they are facing and how TRB can help in addressing those issues. The 2010 field visits by TRB Technical Activities staff reveal that despite diminished resources, the efforts of dedicated staff at transportation agencies--with support from their colleagues in industry, consulting, contracting, universities, and research--are progressing toward key goals, ranging from reducing traffic deaths to improving the environment.
