Has Brisbane forgotten to build for the wet?
Until the 1980s it was rare to find a house in inner-city Brisbane that wasnÂ't elevated. But then people began building in underneath. At the same time, the climate began to change. The Christmas/new year rainfall seemed not so heavy anymore and not so long and during the long drought of the mid-2000s many people in Brisbane found it difficult to remember that heavy rain and flooding were part of its DNA. I remember just a few years ago a builder friend of mine saying weÂ'd all become so used to dry conditions that weÂ'd forgotten to build for the wet.

A matter of trust
Wikipedia turns ten years old tomorrow. What started as a risky project in knowledge sharing has become the standard reference text for anyone who reads English and has access to the Internet: all written by people you donÂ't know, and have no particular reason to trust. You can add content to Wikipedia – a sentence here, a phrase there – which appears accurate in context, but is not. The longer they remain, the more likely they are to become permanent features, fossilised within articles considered Â'completeÂ'. Yet despite its imperfections we canÂ't abandon its essential ethics of inquiry, exploration, and truth.

Taking local action on international issues
Marrickville Council deciding to boycott institutions who support the occupation of Palestine is both a relevant and applicable local government action. Just as our Council will not invest with companies who manufacture weapons, or who do business with the government of Burma, we will now look at who we do business with and whether they support the occupation of Palestine. I can envisage similar resolutions in the future addressing issues such as the use of child labour in cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast.

The paper's place in a digital world
What will keep readers buying newspapers in general, and a folded, stapled, inked sheet of thin paper in particular?

Once were radicals
Acknowledging the link between foreign policies pursued by Australia and the process of radicalisation is a major step forward. It marks a distinct move away from the knee-jerk reaction that signified the Howard governmentÂ's response immediately after September 11. It is now widely accepted that ideology alone does not explain terrorism and now we need to explore how different factors interact to make an Islamist terrorist out of a disgruntled Muslim.
