Burn Injuries are Preventable

TOPIC:  Burn Awareness

 

 

“Most burn injuries occur in the person’s own home, and the vast majority of these injuries could have easily been prevented.” –American Burn Assoc.

 

 

Burn injuries are painful and sometimes require extensive, prolonged treatment.  They can result in permanent scarring, and even death.  Burn injuries are preventable by simply changing behavior and/or eliminating risks in the home.

 

To decrease the risk of burns to yourself and your family, follow these tips:

 

• Set home water heater thermostats no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit/ 48 degrees Celsius
• Provide constant adult supervision to young children in the bathtub
• To prevent scald burns from the faucet, always turn the cold water on first, then add hot water until the desired temperature is reached
• Install grab bars, shower seats, and non-slip mats inside and outside the tub and shower area if used by anyone whose balance is unsteady
• Keep hot liquids, such as coffee, tea, and food on the stove, up high and away from children’s reach
• Keep young children out of the kitchen while cooking, and always use the back burners first, with the handles turned in, to prevent little ones from pulling hot contents down on themselves

 

The #1 type of burn to young children is a scald (hot liquid) burn.   These burns are preventable by just taking a few simple steps towards safe behavior.  Although anyone can sustain a scald burn, infants, young children, older adults, and people with disabilities, are at highest risk.  These high risk groups are also more likely to need hospitalization as a result of their injury.

The climate is suddenly right for a war over tax It's as though a drought has broken in Parliament House. And both leaders are thriving. Julia Gillard, now that she has formally abandoned herself to the reckless pursuit of principle from which she memorably dissuaded her predecessor just under a year ago, is looking more confident than she ever has. Tony Abbott, back in parliament with a healed hamstring and a motivated group of colleagues, is back on form. Their battle is over tax. Just don't mention the C word. To fail to act on climate change ... now that would be unethical Tony Abbott's main argument against a carbon tax is that it 'constitutes an assault on the standard of living of every Australian'. This is a serious but problematic objection. Silence on suicide is the best treatment Please, media, do not believe campaigners who argue that spreading the word of suicide may help save lives. Burqas under your bed If we don't do anything about it soon, the communist socialist PC brigade led by Gillard will have Barack Hussein bin Osama installed as Australia's first Prime Ayatollah. No more jokes on climate change: this is serious The Howard government broke a promise when it put the GST back on the agenda, just as Gillard has broken one over her proposed carbon pricing plan. But unlike Howard, Gillard is vulnerable on the grounds of inconsistency. Howard always believed in a GST; Gillard was in the forefront of those who persuaded Rudd to end his crusade for an ETS. She is now a born-again evangelist for the cause, while Abbott has thrown all past bipartisan support for an ETS out the window. The public has a right to be confused.

Gillard takes a risk on big hairy policies Gillard is attempting two of the riskiest, most challenging reforms ever undertaken in this country: the NBN and taxing carbon emissions. Forget for a moment whether you think either of these things is worth doing; they will unarguably produce profound changes in the structure of the Australian economy and they have stamped Gillard as a courageous and reforming Prime Minister.
