PARKING EDITION, May 2011
Dear omss,

The sun is one hot commodity (no pun intended), and is the Earth's primary source of energy. The existence of virtually all life on Earth is promoted through the light provided by the sun. The sun offers humans a multitude of benefits, from oxygen and vitamin D, to renewable energy.

Humans throughout history have been using an array of ever-evolving technologies to collect and harness energy from the sun. The most common collection method is through solar panels. The latest and greatest in parking also happens to be the latest and greatest in solar energy collection, the solar canopy.
The Solar Canopy
Collecting Renewable Energy and More

Parking solar canopies are structures installed over open parking spaces, supporting solar panels that capture one source of renewable energy..

No longer offering just a place to park your car, many parking lots and garages around the world are being evolved into powerful renewable energy generators. Leading the way, companies like Dell, UCSD, and Google have installed solar canopies to reduce energy costs, decrease their environmental impact, and create greater motorist satisfaction.

Parking solar canopies not only collect solar energy, they also provide shade and help shelter large areas of parking lots and garages from other weather conditions, like rain and snow.

The Benefits
Economic and Environmental Gains

Solar canopies offer a multitude of benefits for both the economy and the environment. Renewable energy generation helps reduce energy consumption costs and in some cases create supplemental means of revenue. Solar canopies also help increase parking satisfaction, helping establish customer loyalty, resulting in further revenue boosts.

Although we all love a revenue boost, solar canopies also offer a positive environmental impact. They help reduce carbon footprinting and help qualify for LEED-certification points, and again help reduce energy consumption.

With the negative environmental impact and high cost of burning fossil fuel, coupled with the highly visible benefits of renewable energy, it's easy to see why the world is starting to embrace renewable energy generating technology.

Further Advancement
Going the Green Step Further

Solar parking canopies help achieve greener goals and save money on energy consumptions costs, so why not take a step even further in the greener direction?

With all the money saved on reducing power costs, you can install other green technologies such as parking guidance. McCain's Parking Guidance System is a cost-effective means to gain maximum parking occupancy and help further reduce your environmental impact.

Pre-budget banter without the speculation
The pretence is gone. The Government doesn't even leak pre-budget scoops anymore. They make selective announcements. No longer do ministers coyly refuse to talk about budget speculation that they put out there in the first place. Now they confirm and discuss. All this is both cynical and clever.

The death of Osama bin Laden
Australian self-image has always been built on a sense of misplacement, of being isolated but vulnerable, and one where the world out there is often conceived as a threat. Australia, we feel, is never 'beyond the reach of the nerve-racking world'. But we also engage with the world, as either individuals, as a nation, or as an economic entity. That undeniable reality belies the image sometimes cited of a scared nation of misplaced Europeans on the edge of Asia.

So... why the return to austerity politics?

Why the return to austerity politics?
One of the hardy perennials of Australian politics is that the first budget of a parliamentary term is the optimal time for 'harsh measures'. Yet among many reasons the budget is likely to be poorly received is the fact that Wayne Swan has not articulated a compelling argument for the necessity of cuts.

Poetic justice has been done
After almost a decade since 9/11, there could be no gladder tidings than the news that Osama bin Laden finally got his. While we have every cause to be gratified by the decapitation of the al-Qaeda snake, we must also bear in mind that jihadist terrorism is a hydra-headed monster. In fact, the political tides of the Islamic radicalism movement in the Middle East seem currently to be on the rise.
