Medicare Safety Net helps those that don't need it
In the next in a series on public policy in Australia Jennifer Doggett argues that the Extended Medicare Safety Net is like a pair of fish-net stockings on a big night out: a good idea in theory but in practice fails to deliver support where it is really needed. A safety net is only needed for the small minority of people who have problems affording health care costs over the long-term. The key to designing a more effective safety net is to target this small group of consumers effectively.

Political correctness and Hollywood hypocrisy

'Family reasons' - your last chance to use your children to feel superior
Kudos should go out to those who make the brave and humble decision to stay accessible to their children in the first place, rather than those who do so after years of hay-making. Â"Family reasonsÂ" start right about the time they hand you the scissors to cut the cord, and end when you start wearing the nappies and eating your roast lamb through a drinking straw.

Tasmania is in a mess.

Lara Giddings Tasmanian Health Minister portrait Sept 2009

State of crisis
Not since 1989 when Labor Premier Michael Field opened the books to find that his State was bankrupt, has there been less auspicious time to lead AustraliaÂ's smallest state.   But that is the position Lara Giddings finds herself in today after the resignation yesterday of Labor Premier David Bartlett, who held the job for less than three years. Why I won't be celebrating Australia Day
I wonÂ't celebrate Australia Day this year. I donÂ't know if I ever have. I know this will make some people angry. I know there are those who think it a form of disloyalty to not believe that Australia is the greatest country on earth. There is a strange correlation between being born in a country and believing that it is the greatest country in the world. This hasnÂ't yet given pause to the super-patriots here and elsewhere. Yet this is suggestive that patriotic fervour is not always entirely rational, or motivated by a sober evaluation of the merits and flaws of oneÂ's homeland.

The patient art of dying
The Productivity Commission's call for urgent reform of aged-care is an extraordinary and long-overdue document that, if implemented, will go a long way toward rectifying the myriad injustices and forms of institutional and economic abuse to which our elderly are subjected in the final years of their lives. And yet it would be mistake to limit our focus to the institutional and economic dimensions of aged-care. There is an equally important moral or personal dimension to the ongoing catastrophe of aged-care in Australia that demands a reform of our moral imaginations as well.

Northern Heart and soul
Melbourne Heart may be the new kid on the soccer block but with a geo-political divide as stark as Melbourne's a rivalry could emerge that would make AFL suburban rivalries seem twee. Victory may find no pleasure in being cast in the role of the southern dandies, but for the Heart, the mantle of the northern soul is theirs for the taking. Let football prise open this city's hairline crack a tiny bit further.
