History repeating: The CPRS is back?
The multi-party climate change committee will meet on Tuesday, with all signs pointing to a renewed commitment to emissions trading, perhaps even the revival of the same dilapidated Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme canned in April 2010. But how did we get to CPRS.2? Especially when the prospects of it lowering emissions and prompting a just transition toward decarbonisation are zero.

Enough with the politics on asylum seekers
The most recent tragedy to befall boat-borne asylum seekers has brought home the absolute bankruptcy of the policy and politics surrounding the needs of these desperate people. Neither of the two major parties in this country have the intellectual capacity or emotional maturity to develop a sustainable response to the phenomena. Dirty, grubby domestic politics ensures that little rational discussion of the asylum seeker issue can take place.

Who will hold the master switch?
Telstra and other examples show the tension between competition and efficiency is the key factor in NBN success.

Royal Commission Gillard's best bet on asylum boat tragedy

Royal Commission Gillard's best bet on asylum boat tragedy
As Labor limps to the end of a bad year the malaise at the centre of Julia Gillard's Prime Ministership has become apparent; a failure of the will to govern. The latest and most stark example of this governance vacuum has been the truly awful events that have crashed in not only on the rocks of Christmas Island but also in upon the paucity of what passes for policy on asylum seekers in Australia. What Gillard should have done was to announce the establishment of a Royal Commission into the loss of life in the tragedy.

TV the real business of the NBN
The NBN business plan due to be released today by the Communications Minister Stephen Conroy probably won't describe the network as a TV distribution system. But that's what it will be. The decision to build it was made by politicians and was therefore political, and the debate about it that is being assiduously preserved by Opposition spokesman Malcolm Turnbull is also political. But the NBN's business, which will probably not be spelt out clearly in the business plan today, is video delivery.

Asylum tragedy demands something finer in our politics
This week's tragedy off Christmas Island is likely to fire the starting pistol on a race to the bottom between the Government and the Opposition to see who has the toughest asylum polices. The tragedy off Christmas Island should give the Government and Opposition pause for thought. Amidst talk of surges and opinion polls and crowded detention centres it's easy to forget that we're really talking about human beings, many of them fleeing for their lives.
