Bridges for the Future

Open for Public Review: Amendments to the 2011-2014 Transportation Improvement Program

Baltimore (March 18, 2011) -- Baltimore and Carroll counties have asked to add $7.5 million dollars in bridge improvement projects to the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board's 2011-2014 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Baltimore County is requesting to add a $1.7 million preservation project to repair the Jericho Covered Bridge over the Little Gunpowder Falls. The bridge, located near Jerusalem in Harford County and Kingsville in Baltimore County, was built in 1865 and was last rehabilitated in 1982. It currently has a Bridge Sufficiency Rating of 48.5. This project includes replacing deteriorated timber, repairing the roof, painting, etc.

$1.3 million of the funding will come from the Federal Highway Administration's National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program. Baltimore and Harford counties, the joint owners of the bridge, will allocate a total of $39,800 to complete the funding.

Carroll County is requesting amendments for the following bridge projects.  Funding for these projects will come from the Federal Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Fund.

White Rock Road over Piney Run

  • New Project Funding Source; Advances Project by 1 year
  • $576,000 to replace key features on bridge to address structural safety issues and deterioration of current structure.

Bollinger Road over Beaver Run

  • Federal Funding Received for Construction
  • $691,000 to replace the single span bridge as beams are in poor condition, exhibiting section loss and severe corrosion.

Shepherds Mill Road over Little Pipe Creek

  • New Preservation Project
  • Approximately $4 million to replace this bridge built in 1965.

Areawide Bridge Cleaning and Painting

  • New Preservation Project for 5 bridges
  • $575,000 to clean and paint 5 local bridges (Mumma Ford Road over Monocacy; McKinstrys Mill Road over Little Pipe Creek; Winters Church over Little Pipe Creek; Grimville Road over Gillis Falls; and Woodbine Road over South Branch of Patapsco). The purpose of this project is to stop corrosion and provide protection of steel bridges.

These amendments to the TIP are open for public review and comment through Monday, April 11, 2011

Atomised information fuels a media meltdown
Nuclear power is scary stuff for most people. The mere mention of it conjures images of Chernobyl, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And this week, those images have been brought back to the fore with the events that are unfolding at the Fukushima Daiici nuclear power plant in Japan. But as someone with a background in science I groan at the hyperbole of some of the speculation and misinformation being spread by the mainstream and social media.

Kevin, um, it seems, ah, we (shuffle) sort of, ah, owe you an apology
Okay: I'll be the first to say it. Sorry, Kevin. After all the fuss about the Foreign Minister imperiously demanding nuclear updates, it's now pretty clear that he was right to do so. After all the intrigue about Kevin's obsession with establishing a no-fly zone over Benghazi, it might now be time to admit the possibility that it was the Foreign Minister who was right all along.

Immigration in meltdown: and no plan B
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen has many critics but he must be given his due. He has made the best of circumstances where he had no say in choosing the ground on which he would fight. He has toiled resolutely and patiently at it, made some good changes and fronted up to tough choices. Even so, there is every sign that the immigration detention centre system is coming apart at the seams.
