President Obama “cannot guarantee” that Social Security, veterans and disability checks will be issued if Congress cannot agree on a deal that would raise the government’s debt ceiling by August 2nd, he tells CBS News.

"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” Obama said in an excerpt of the interview released by CBS.

Thomson Reuters has released the 2010 citation impact factor for the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR). In 2010, the TRR recorded its highest impact factor to date at 0.482. This continues the upward trend in recent years.

HCM2010 Webinar Series: Enhanced Planning Methods and Applications of Generalized Service Volume Tables

TRB is cosponsoring a webinar on July 21, 2011, from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. EDT, which is being conducted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), that will examine enhancements to the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 (HCM2010) that can be applied to planning and preliminary engineering applications. A major focus of the webinar will be a demonstration of the new generalized service volume tables that are designed to allow for quick estimates of level of service for freeways, multi-lane highways, and urban streets.  Participants must register in advance of the webinar, space is limited, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees.

TRB is cosponsoring a webinar on July 19, 2011, from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. EDT, which is being conducted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), that will examine enhancements to the Highway Capacity Manual 2010's (HCM2010's) freeway facilities method and its implementation by the FREEVAL computational engine, which is included as part of Volume 4 of HCM2010. The webinar will explore the capabilities of the freeway facilities method and demonstrate uses of the FREEVAL computational engine.  Participants must register in advance of the webinar, space is limited, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees.

7th Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics: SURF 2012*

TRB is cosponsoring the 7th Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics: SURF 2012 on September 19-22, 2012, in Norfolk, Virginia. The primary focus of the symposium is to explore the state-of-the-art of the scientific knowledge in the area of surface characteristics and pavement and tire interaction on roads and airfields. In addition, SURF is designed to be a forum to share and disseminate information on the latest technological developments for the collection of data, quality control, and statistical validation, and on the use of the data in infrastructure management systems. The deadline for  submission of abstracts by individuals and groups wishing to present at the symposium is July 31, 2011.  The call for papers is available online.
